Molokini Crater Maui
Created by volcanic ash and lava erupting from the sea floor hundreds of years ago, Molokini Crater has since been worn down to a narrow crescent midway between Maui and Kahoolawe. Free from island runoff and protected by its semi-circle sea wall, the interior of Molokini is one of the top dive spots on Earth. Hundreds of feet of visibility allow you to witness vibrant coral and fish species.
A marine and bird sanctuary, the crater’s walls are off limits as they are the nesting grounds for several endangered seabirds. The outside edge of the crater is a steep cliff dropping more than 250 feet into the deep pacific. A popular spot for scuba divers, the dive is best reserved for experienced or guided divers as the outer rim lacks the protection from winds and swirling ocean currents. You can also snorkel Molokini through local charter companies.
Tours leave daily for Molokini from Lahaina Harbor and Ma’alaea. The non-profit Pacific Whale Foundation offers daily snorkel trips to the crater. Packages often include lunch and beverages and there is always a naturalist aboard to answer questions and give talks on the surrounding sea life. If you’re lucky enough to sail in the winter months, you’ll no doubt have the chance to see the pacific humpback whales in their seasonal breeding grounds.
