The large fertile isthmus located between the island’s two volcanoes is known as Central Maui. It includes Kahului and Wailuku.
Kahului - With an estimated population of 20,146 people, Kahului is considered the largest city in Maui. The island’s main airport and seaport are both located here. Kahului is a key distribution point for agricultural products. Although Kahului is mainly a commercial area, there are a couple of small hotels located near the airport that would serve well for an overnight stay. Attractions include shopping and The Maui Arts and Cultural Center.
Wailuku - Situated at the base of the West Maui Mountains-gateway to the famous Iao Valley- is the historical community of Wailuku. A leisurely drive through the heart of Wailuku reveals a town in the midst of a renaissance. Charming wooden storefronts and old plantation homes offer a window into the past. Kamehameha the Great invaded Wailuku in 1790. He initiated a massive battle that raged for two days. On the third day Kamehameha aided his army with the use of two cannons. Helpless against these new firearms, Maui’s troops retreated into Iao Valley where they were trapped by its narrow walls and then slaughtered by Kamehmeha’s troops. The massive numbers of fallen bodies dammed the banks of the ‘Īao River causing the water to flow red with blood. Today this valley sits in peace with hiking trails and a botanical garden.
