My Hawaii

Local faves and raves with Jenny Kalmbach

Name: Jenny Kalmbach

Occupation & Employer: Stand Up Paddling Competitor, SUP Ambassador for The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows and Outdoor Pursuits at Kukio Golf and Beach Club

How long have you lived in Hawaii: 6 years

Moved from: Costa Rica

Favorite beach: Makalawena, it’s so amazing! It’s one of the most spectacular beaches I have ever been to, with its long white sandy beach and turquoise water…I love it!

Favorite pastime/activity: Stand up paddling—especially along the Kona Coast. The spinner dolphins are a common sight in the Kailua Bay and the reefs are colorful and full of marine life, like the vibrant yellow tang.

Favorite drive: The coastal drive along the Kohala Coast on my way to paddle Keokea. It’s a scenic route, with natural grasses and kiawe (mesquite) trees and breathtaking views. During the winter months you can even see whales breaching offshore—can’t really beat that!

Favorite hangout: Ceviche Dave’s—great food, good people, live music and views of the surf! It’s the perfect place to hang out with friends after a paddle or surf, or to just grab a bite to eat.

Favorite Hawaiian product: Kona coffee or chocolate covered macadamia nuts, both are really good and grown on the Big Island!

Favorite Hawaiian band/CD: Paula Fuga, she has an incredible voice and beautiful songs, her album Lilikoi is my favorite.

Favorite place to catch the sunset/sunrise: The summit of Mauna Kea because of its panoramic views of the island and coastline. It’s cool to watch the sun set and the moon and stars rise. It’s not often that I make it up there, but when I do, it’s always worth it.

Favorite place for happy hour: Kona Brewing Co. I go there at least once a week—the Wailua Wheat Ale is really good, the atmosphere is fun and the food is delicious. My favorite item on the menu right now is the fish tacos! Make sure to stop by for one of their Firkin Fridays where they tap a special one-of-a-kind brew for the night!

Lucky you live Hawaii because…it offers a lifestyle you can’t get anywhere else—it’s beautiful, laid back and there is always something fun to do.
